Social media has connected us with people from all over the world and we sometimes get wonderful gifts from followers. We received a package in the mail from one of our followers in Nevada, who found these cuts being thrown away many years ago from the California Department of Food and Agriculture in Sacramento. In this video, Howard opened the box containing a wide variety of letterpress cuts. Many of the cuts depict wildlife and insects that can negatively impact agricultural production. At the end of this video, Jared letterpress printed the largest one depicting a World War I ad campaign to eliminate ground squirrels from destroying crops. This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press. In this video, Howard letterpress printed a couple halftones of some small wildlife that can be a problem for agricultural production. One halftone is of a rat and the other is of a couple California ground squirrels. The Belgian comic was created by Raoul Cauvin and it follows two United States cavalrymen during the American Civil War. For today, Alex D., our apprentice in the print shop from Belgium, letterpress printed something for the anniversary of The Bluecoats. In honor of the weekend, Jared letterpress printed the union label, in different sized bugs, for the Allied Printing Trades Council, which had its beginnings in Sacramento since the 1890s. These bugs are cast in type metal (lead alloy) and are from the Bill Skarles Collection. These were used to show that the prints were made in a union printing office. In this video, Howard letterpress printed a couple halftones of some small wildlife that can be a problem for agricultural production. One halftone is of a rat and the other is of a couple California ground squirrels. He did a great job on this- putting mics on the stage lip along with recording soundboard audio. This is done to ensure that you get clean vocals plus all the instruments through one of the 2 sources. It works every time! Well, except this time. There was no guitar anywhere-- not in the room, not in the board mix. I did my best to bump it up a little in Izotope, but even then it is a bit light on guitar. Still enjoyable.
